There is a difference of opinion in the ḥanafī madhhab in regard to the maximum period of breastfeeding. According to Imām Abū Ḥanīfah, the maximum period of breastfeeding is 30 months (2.5 years). According to his two illustrious students, Imām Abū Yusuf and Imām Muḥammad (jointly referred to as ṣāḥibayn), it is 2 years. The fatwā is on ṣāḥibayn’s opinion. [1]

قال داماد أفندي: (وَهِيَ) أَيْ مُدَّتُهُ (حَوْلَانِ وَنِصْفٌ) أَيْ ثَلَاثُونَ شَهْرًا مِنْ وَقْتِ الْوِلَادَةِ عِنْدَ الْإِمَامِ … (وَعِنْدَهُمَا حَوْلَانِ) وَهُوَ قَوْلُ الشَّافِعِيِّ وَعَلَيْهِ الْفَتْوَى كَمَا فِي الْمَوَاهِبِ وَبِهِ أَخَذَ الطَّحَاوِيُّ. قال الحصكفي: وعندهما حولان من وقت الولادة وعليه الفتوىٰ. (الدر المنتقىٰ (١/٥٥٢))
قال الكمال ابن الهمام: ثم مدة الرضاع ثلاثون شهرا عند ابي حنيفة وقالا سنتان … فكان الأصح قولهما وهو مختار الطحاوي (فتح القدير (٣/٤٢٥))
