Resolution 5: Carmine in M&Ms Chocolate

Question: 

Is it permissible to eat M&M’s chocolates that contain carmine?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

According to the Ḥanafī Madhhab, the consumption of insects is prohibited. Carmine (also known as carminic acid) is derived from cochineal insects and may contain particles originating from them. Therefore, its consumption is not permissible. [i] Accordingly, M&M’s chocolates containing carmine are not considered suitable for a ḥalāl diet.
