Question:
As-salamu alaykum
Can you kindly answer the following questions related to jumu’ah:
1. How many people do you need for the jumu’ah salah for the jumu’ah to be valid?
2. What are the conditions for the khutbah to be valid?
3. Is it allowed for one person to do the khutbah and another to lead salah?
(Question published as received)
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
1. For jumuʿah ṣalāh to be valid, a minimum of three pubescent (bāligh) men are required, excluding the Imām, hence a minimum of four individuals in total.
2. The khuṭbah of jumuʿah is necessary; without it, jumuʿah would be invalid. It is sunnah for the Imām to sit between the two parts of the khuṭbah. Moreover, the khuṭbah must be delivered in the Arabic language. Ideally, the khaṭīb should render the khuṭbah from memory; however, it is permissible to deliver it from a book. It is mustaḥab (recommended) to mention the al-Khulafāʾ al-Rāshidīn during the khuṭbah.
3. Yes, it is permissible. However, it is preferable if one person does both.
And Allah knows best
